2012 Snake Count

The dates are announced..go to www.snakecount.snakeconservation.org to sign up for the Spring 2012 Snake Count.

Spend a day or a week in the field and help conserve snakes!  The Center for Snake Conservation (CSC) invites you to join them on their annual spring SNAKE COUNT.  There are ±295 species/subspecies of snakes in the United States but very little is known about their current conservation status and distributions in today’s human impacted environment.  In order to ensure that appropriate and adequate conservation efforts are applied to snakes, we need to understand more about them and where they occur.  The 2011 fall snake count was a huge success and we intend to keep growing in 2012 and the future with counts both in the spring and fall.
Our goal during the SNAKE COUNT is to document every species of snake that occurs in the United States, Canada, and Mexico—YES, we are expanding the count to include all of North America.  A lofty goal but the data we collect will confirm the existence of some rare species and provide baseline data to help us monitor populations of the more common species in the future.  In order to protect and conserve snakes, we must first know where they exist and why they may be disappearing in other areas.  The SNAKE COUNT is the first step!
The data collected during the SNAKE COUNT will be used by the CSC to map the current snake distributions of snakes in the United States.  Specific locality information for snakes collected during the blitz will not be made available to the public, so rest assured that any rare species found will remain protected.  The data collected will be used only in CSC research.
If you cannot participate in an event during the SNAKE COUNT, the CSC needs your help in many other ways.  We are currently looking for regional and state coordinators for 2012.  Please consider making a donation to help fund programs such as the SNAKE COUNT.  Please visit our website (www.snakeconservation.org) to learn how you can help us conserve snakes!
